The Procrastinator and the Dark Playground

So I’m a bit of a procrastinator. Not in all areas of my life. I have a strong work ethic and I’m generally motivated in my work.Throughout my years of studying, my assignments were always done in advance of the deadline. However, I can procrastinate in my day to day life. There are so many things I want to do but when it comes down to it, I just don’t seem to be able to find my mojo to get them done. I want to get back to running and yoga. I have loads of art and craft ideas I want to try. I have so many interesting books waiting to e read. It’s just not really happening.

I think I am spending too much time in the Dark Playground! Don’t worry, it sounds worse than it is. I have come to understand about the ‘Dark Playground’ from Tim Urban. Here’s a drawing of his Dark Playground.Read More »

The Benefits of Therapeutic Baths

Since the beginning of time, bathing in water has been essential to health and peace of mind. As early as the third century, bathing emporiums quickly became the fashion. A hot bath is the original “hydrotherapy” (water treatment) and is still one the most accessible. In our busy, modern lives it’s easy to opt for a quick shower rather than investing time in having a long, soak in the bath.

For me therapeutic baths are a really beneficial tool for health and well-being. I am now making therapeutic baths part of my weekly routine.Read More »

The Quest for Happiness v Attitude Gratitude

piglet_gratitude_winnie_the_poohAnyone who has ever checked out any health, well being or self help section of a book shop knows that ‘Happiness’ is one of the buzz words. There are blog posts a plenty.  Get it and you’ve go everything. It’s this thing that we are encouraged to seek and strive for. It’s the thing that will make it all okay.

If it works for you – that’s great but it all just feels a little bit unrealistic to me. After all isn’t happiness a feeling? It’s an emotion right? Emotions are not fixed states, they ebb and flow. We do not expect to always feel angry or sad so why does a state of happiness feel like something we should aim for? Like we expect to experience sadness and anger in our lives, we will also experience happiness. However, it is not possible for it to remain constant.Read More »

Do it like the Danish – Hygge

hygge (1)

I have not been fortunate enough to ever visit Denmark. It is often reported as being one of the ‘happiest countries’. These sort of reports always intrigue me. What is that makes these places the happiest?

They have proper winters – up to 17 hours of darkness per day and average temperatures around 0C.

Winter is a season I struggle to fully embrace and appreciate. I have personal reasons so it’s not just the darkness and the weather, it’s a sad time for me (that’s for another day and a different post).

This year I am on a mission to make friends with winter.

Here in the UK we are definitely preparing for the winter. The clocks have changed, bringer longer periods of darkness. The sunny, blue sky, crisp autumn days seem to have faded. My mission is underway.

This year, I am planning to do it like a Dane! If they can be happy in winter, I want some of what they have.Read More »

Trying Out Hypnosis – Allowing Tension to Melt Away

Allowing tension to melt away

My blog is about cultivating my time to allow for greater focus on my own well being. This includes exploring new ideas and trying new things. The new thing I have recently tried is a Hypnosis Drop in Session.

The flyer offered ‘A guided mental journey of calm to allow tension to melt away’. That definitely sounded appealing so off I went.

At the beginning of the session the therapist explained what hypnosis was. Since the session I have done a bit of reading around to find out more.

Hypnotherapy is an alternative therapeutic treatment. It is very different from the hypnosis done for entertainment on tv shows. No one jumping around pretending to be a monkey here! All hypnosis is self hypnosis, it comes from yourself. You are always in control. You cannot be hypnotised without your consent. Read More »
