The June Book Nook

I love a good book, whether it’s reading a paperback or listening to an audiobook. I usually have at least one paperback and one audiobook on the go. Here are some of my favourite reads over the last few months –

Ink and Bone (The Great Library, #1)

Knowledge is power. Power corrupts. Ink & Bone is the first book in a series. It’s classed as a young adult read. I really, really enjoyed this book. Based in a world where the ancient Great Library of Alexandria still exists but owning private books is a crime. The reader is introduced to a group of different young people who are competing for rolls within the library structure that becomes increasingly dangerous. As a lover of books, old libraries, different worlds and adventure, this book had it all for me. I have the second book in the series to read later in the year.

Elizabeth Is Missing

Maude is 82 yrs old and her memories of the past with her sister, have become confused with the present day and concerns for her friend, Elizabeth. I think this is a well written book that portrays life with dementia. This is a poignant read, sometimes sad, sometimes funny. I found myself hooked into the story, striving to understand and makes sense of Maude’s memories and the present reality. It gave me greater understanding of living with dementia.

The Book Nook

January is generally my least favourite month. I’m not keen on the short, cold, dark days, while I wait for the coming of spring. So it’s an ideal time for reading and listening to audiobooks. I have been a busy book bee this month. I thought I would share my January reads. It’s been a mixed lot at my January Book Nook.

I really enjoyed this feel good book. It was a really easy, fun read. Narrated by a charming and socially challenged genetics professor on an unusual quest: to find out if he is capable of true love. It made me reflect that we can have an idea of what we need or what we like but sometimes it’s only when we try something different that we discover what really would be best for us. I’m looking forward to reading The Rosie Effect later in the year.

What’s the value in reading fiction?

One of my tasks/ goals for 2016 was to read more – I Spy Book Challenge 2016

I’m a fan of audio books. I regularly listen on my mp3 – walking the dog, doing housework, soaking in the bath and in bed before sleep. Listening to books is going great – it’s reading books that is not quite going to plan.

I have a small bookcase seriously over flowing with fiction books. There are some books I am looking forward to reading. But I just don’t seem to be making time in my life to read books. Admittedly, when I have free time to read, there is now a tendency to go to my WordPress Reader to explore other people’s blogs and support my fellow bloggers. In the modern world there is a a lot of options for escapism and distraction – the massive world of the internet, box sets, films galore and of course blogs, blogs and more blogs. I want to find space in my life for books.

In an attempt to remind myself of the value of reading fiction, I am exploring the benefits of reading fiction. Read More »

2016 Let’s Do This – Better Late Than Never

As some of you know my New Year plans were scuppered by a visit to Bronchitis Land. Being very ill for a 2 solid weeks was not the best start to a year. However, I tried to embrace the situation. Check out my post in case you missed it – Seeking new year inspiration while surviving acute bronchitis.

Anyway, I am now well into my recovery – hooray, hooray! I have started my new job, which is going well – hooray, hooray! So it’s time to get to grips with this whole New Year thing. Let’s get this show on the road.

So here’s some of my plans, goals, tasks (whatever you want to call them) for the year ahead.Read More »

I Spy Book Challenge 2016

Find time for reading: So one of my big adventures this year has been to start this blog. I am loving Blog Land and all the lovely people I have met along the way. However, the time spent on developing my blog and following fellow bloggers, has meant I have neglected other things in my life. Now I’m on a blog roll (long may it continue), I hope it will be less all consuming.

One of the things I am planning to get back to is reading more fiction. To help inspire this I have joined my first ever book challenge!

So one of my goals for 2016 is the –
